Carbon neutral house receives planning approval
12/12/07
The new house has been designed as a response to the rural setting in general and is deliberately not domestic in form to respond to the farm setting. The house is semi-dug in to the existing site contours and consists of a series of inclined roof planes with moss-sedum 'green' roofing. The other external materials of cedar boarding and zinc cladding have been carefully selected to mellow with age and reflect the pallette of materials usually evident in a farm setting the inclined roof planes reduce the apparent mass of the building when viewed from the existing barns and the eaves lines to the roofs will be very similar to those on the surrounding barns. The shape of the new house provides flexible living accomodation for a family, with all major rooms benefitting from a southerly aspect. The shape also creates enclosed external spaces that are sheltered from the weather and provide privacy from the rest of the development. Ultimately, when viewed from a distance, the new house will blend with the surrounding landscape, both in form and materials. And when viewed close-up, the new house will evoke farm buildings without imitating their form
